Rebel Wilson and Ramona Agruma have been going strong since they made their relationship public last year. But despite Wilson’s own family’s acceptance of the same-sex couple, Agruma’s family hasn’t been as open to the romance.
In an interview on the Australian podcast Life Uncut, the Pitch Perfect star opened up about the difficulties Agruma has faced due to her family’s disapproval. “My whole family has just been amazing,” Wilson, 42, said. “Ramona’s family hasn’t been as accepting. And so in many respects, it has been a lot harder on her to have to make the news public.”
Wilson also discussed her own journey to accepting her sexuality. “I never felt 100 percent straight,” she said. But her conservative upbringing and Christian school education kept her from exploring those feelings. “When I talked to my good friends, they all knew that part of me, but it wasn’t like I was actively exploring it,” she said. “I was dating guys, but always being like, ‘I wish they were a bit more like this…’”
But while Wilson said she wasn’t actively exploring her sexuality, a same-sex kiss in the 2022 movie The Almond and the Seahorse made her “feel more open to exploring.” And when she met Agruma, “it just clicked,” Wilson said. “I feel lucky to have found her.”
The couple is now raising Wilson’s daughter, Royce Lillian, who was born via surrogate in November. Wilson said she kept the pregnancy a closely guarded secret until two months into dating Agruma, when the surrogate had completed her first trimester.
“I know I’m in an awesome same-sex relationship, but then you’re like: I still don’t quite know how to classify myself or my sexuality,” she said. “I think it can be complex. It doesn’t mean I was straight and now I’m suddenly gay. I don’t know — I’m just me and seeing how it goes.”
Wilson also announced she’s launching a dating app called Fluid. The app is designed to make it easier for people to explore their sexual orientation without having to label themselves or worry about how that might affect their potential matches.
“I just thought, God, if that had existed five years earlier that would have been great for me,” she said.
Wilson and Agruma are setting an example of strength and acceptance for the LGBTQ+ community. The couple’s story is a testament to the power of finding love and support, even in the face of family disapproval.
