Richard J. Maedge is a poignant reminder of the devastating effects of suicide and the importance of mental health awareness. The 53-year-old Troy, Illinois, resident was reported missing on April 27, 2020, after calling his wife to tell her he was leaving work early. Eight months later, his body was found in a hideaway closet in his home.
The Madison County Coroner’s Office confirmed last week that Richard Maedge had died by suicide. His wife, Jennifer Maedge, recalled to the Belleville News-Democrat that she found her husband’s body on Dec. 11 while looking for Christmas decorations in a storage area behind a clothes cupboard under a staircase in the home. The body was in a mummified state, which could explain why the smell wasn’t “overpowering” and why it took so long to find it.
Richard J. Maedge’s death serves as a stark reminder of just how serious mental health issues can be and how quickly they can lead to tragedy. Mental health is a serious problem that affects millions of people worldwide, and while there are a variety of treatments available, they are not always effective or accessible. That’s why it’s so important to provide support and resources to those who are struggling with their mental health, and to create a safe and nurturing environment where people can talk about their issues without fear of judgement or stigma.
It’s also important to remember that suicide is preventable, and that anyone who is feeling suicidal or is worried about someone else should contact the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline. The crisis counselors at 988 are available 24/7 and can provide support, guidance, and resources to those in need.
We can all do our part to help prevent suicide and ensure that those who are struggling have access to the resources and support they need. Let’s honor Richard J. Maedge’s memory by creating a safe and supportive environment for those who are struggling with their mental health.
