The Impact of the Tennessee Titans’ Offseason Cuts

The Tennessee Titans have made some major moves this offseason in preparation for the upcoming 2023 free agency period. They have released several veterans and high-profile players, including pass rusher Bud Dupree, wide receiver Robert Woods, offensive lineman Taylor Lewan, linebacker Eric Kendricks, and kicker Ryan Bullock.

The move with the biggest financial impact was the release of Dupree, who was owed $17 million in base salary this season. The Titans saved $9.35 million by releasing the former Pro Bowler, but the move also comes with a dead cap hit of $10.85 million.

The release of Woods also had a major financial impact. Woods was in the middle of a four-year, $58 million deal he signed in 2020 but the Titans saved $12.01 million in salary cap with a dead cap hit of only $2.59 million.

Meanwhile, the release of Lewan cleared $14.84 million off Tennessee’s books. Lewan was the first of many surprise veteran cuts by the Titans this offseason.

The release of Cunningham saved the Titans $8.92 million, but it will cost the team $4.5 million in dead cap in 2023. Bullock’s release was not as major as the others, but it still saved Tennessee $2.13 million in 2023.

The biggest surprise move of them all came when the Titans released Kendricks. The former Minnesota Viking had played his entire career in Minnesota before the Vikings released him, saving them $9.5 million but coming with a $1.93 million dead cap hit.

The Tennessee Titans have made some major moves this offseason, and their salary cap situation will be much better going into the 2023 free agency period. We will have to wait and see how the team uses their newfound salary cap space.
