The far-right provocateur Alex Jones is no stranger to controversy. The InfoWars founder has made a name for himself by promoting conspiracy theories, attacking opponents and the media, and even denying the tragic events of the Sandy Hook massacre.
Now, Jones is facing a different kind of scrutiny, as authorities investigate his finances and search for assets to pay back the nearly $1.5 billion in damages owed to the families of Sandy Hook victims.
On Thursday, Jones’s wife, Erika Wulff Jones, shared a video of her husband complaining that authorities want to take his cat, Mushu. Jones said the cat was worth around $2,000, and that the Justice Department had spent “five minutes” of a three-hour hearing talking about the pet.
The video was met with criticism and ridicule on social media, but authorities may be more interested in the $1.3 million that Jones transferred to relatives in the aftermath of the landmark defamation lawsuits.
It is unclear whether the cat is part of those assets. However, Jones’s personal bankruptcy filing requires him to list all of his personal and household items, including his cat.
Jones’s filing also showed that he owns three homes in Austin, Texas, three cars, two boats, several guns, and is spending almost $100,000 a month on expenses.
As the bankruptcy proceedings move forward, it remains to be seen if authorities will be able to uncover any hidden assets and use them to pay back the families of Sandy Hook victims. For now, it appears that the fate of Jones’s beloved pet cat is still in question.
