The Denver Broncos have tapped former Arizona Cardinals defensive coordinator Vance Joseph to take on the same role with the team in 2021. Joseph reunites with head coach Sean Payton after working together in New Orleans and brings a wealth of experience to the position.
Joseph spent the last three seasons with the Arizona Cardinals, where he helped transform the team’s defense into one of the best in the league. From 2019-2022, the Cardinals had the 13th-best defense in the NFL and allowed the fewest yards per completion.
Joseph brings a wealth of experience to the Broncos. He was the head coach of the Denver Broncos in 2017 and 2018, where he had an 11-21 record. Prior to that, he was the defensive coordinator of the Miami Dolphins from 2016-2017, and he was also the defensive backs coach for the San Francisco 49ers from 2011-2013 and the Houston Texans from 2014-2015.
The Broncos have put together a formidable defense in recent years, and Joseph will have the chance to build on that success. The team had the 14th-best defense in the NFL this season and allowed the seventh-fewest yards per game.
The Broncos have some talented players on that side of the ball, including safety Justin Simmons, Pro Bowl cornerback Patrick Surtain, and defensive linemen D.J. Jones, Josey Jewell, and Dre’Mont Jones. They’ll also be getting back a healthy Randy Gregory, who missed 11 games this past season with a knee injury.
With Joseph at the helm, the Broncos’ defense could be even better in 2021. Joseph has a wealth of experience and a proven track record of success, and the Broncos will be looking to him to help take their defense to the next level.
