Chris Pine and Harry Styles had a moment at the premiere of Don’t Worry Darling that went viral for all the wrong reasons. A moment that was quickly dubbed “spitgate” made the internet think that Styles had spit on Pine, but the actor is clearing up the rumors for the first time.
In an exclusive interview with Esquire, Pine revealed the truth behind the moment. It turns out that Styles leaned down to share an inside joke with Pine and the actor was completely unaware that the public thought he had been spat on.
“It does look, indeed, like Harry spitting on me. He didn’t spit on me,” Pine declared to the magazine. He also noted that Styles is “a very very kind guy.”
Pine’s publicist woke him up on the plane back from the Venice Film Festival and informed him about the incident. “We have to craft a message about what happened in Venice. And I’m like ‘About what?’ ‘About Harry spitting on you.’ Which I have no idea what happened,” Pine recalled.
The actor’s response to the incident was more lighthearted than one might expect. In fact, he found all the memes that circulated of him looking “checked out” during the event hilarious. Pine explained that he was simply jetlagged and looking up at the ceiling because “sometimes the question’s not that interesting.”
While Pine may have found humor in the situation, the same can’t be said for the film’s reputation. The actor expressed that he felt the online vitriol was “out of proportion with what was onscreen.”
Ultimately, it seems that the “spitgate” moment was more of a misunderstanding than anything else. Chris Pine’s interview with Esquire sets the record straight on what actually happened between him and Harry Styles at the Don’t Worry Darling premiere in Venice.
