The Washington Commanders have made a commitment to new offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy that the Kansas City Chiefs wouldn’t make. Bieniemy signed a multi-year contract to become the Commanders’ assistant head coach and offensive coordinator, which gives him the stability and security he lacked in Kansas City.
During his five-year tenure with the Chiefs, Bieniemy always had just a one-year contract, leaving him vulnerable to getting cut if he didn’t perform up to expectations. Now, he has more job security and more authority as he takes on a larger role with the Commanders.
Bieniemy will also have the opportunity to “run the show” as the offensive coordinator, something that Chiefs’ coach Andy Reid had hoped for. With head coach Ron Rivera’s background being on the defensive side of the ball, there will be less interference from the top and Bieniemy will be able to implement his own offensive strategies.
The one caveat is that the team is currently for sale, so Bieniemy could potentially be out of a job if a new owner decides to make wholesale changes. But for now, he has the commitment from the Commanders that he did not get from the Chiefs.
This move could be a great opportunity for Bieniemy to show what he is capable of and prove that he is capable of leading an offense. He may not have much time to make an impact, but he will at least have the security of a multi-year contract.
