With Marcus Mariota no longer being a part of the Atlanta Falcons’ plans, teams looking for an experienced veteran backup have another option available.
Mariota was cut by the Falcons on Monday, and although he started 13 games for the team, he wasn’t able to establish himself as the long-term solution. The Falcons made it clear they would be adding to their current quarterback room, which is led by second-year player Desmond Ridder.
Mariota hasn’t had a chance to be a regular starter since 2019 when he was with the Tennessee Titans. His chance with the Falcons wasn’t a great one, as the team had a weak supporting cast and were looking ahead to a more permanent solution at quarterback. Mariota’s performance was not enough to keep him with the team, as he had 15 touchdowns, nine interceptions and an 88.2 passer rating. He was eventually benched for Ridder late in the season.
Now that the Falcons have started to reshape their quarterback position, Mariota will be a priority backup on the market. He will turn 30 next season, giving teams an experienced veteran who can provide valuable leadership in the locker room. He could be a great addition to a team who needs an experienced backup, providing a steady presence in the QB room and a reliable option if the starter goes down.
Mariota may not be the starter he once was, but he still has plenty to offer as a backup. Teams in need of a reliable veteran presence at the quarterback position should consider bringing the former Titans and Falcons QB onboard.
