Georgetown University has officially parted ways with Patrick Ewing, bringing an end to the Hall of Famer’s six-year tenure as head coach of the Hoyas.
Ewing’s time at Georgetown was largely a disappointment, as the Hoyas failed to break the 10-win barrier in either of his last two seasons and posted a combined record of 13-50 over that span.
Ewing’s tenure was marked by a lack of success both on and off the court. The Hoyas were blown out by Villanova in the first round of the Big East tournament, capping off a 7-25 season that included a 2-18 record in conference play.
The high point of Ewing’s time at Georgetown was an NCAA tournament appearance in 2021, but the Hoyas would not make it back to the Big Dance in either of the ensuing two seasons.
The news of Ewing’s dismissal comes as a disappointment to Georgetown fans, who had hoped to see the school’s all-time leading scorer return the program to its former glory. Ewing was beloved by the Georgetown faithful and was seen as the perfect candidate to lead the Hoyas back to the top of the Big East.
Unfortunately, Ewing was unable to do so, and Georgetown will now begin a search for a new head coach who can bring the program back to relevance.
It is unclear at this time who the Hoyas will target to replace Ewing, but it is certain that the new head coach will face a daunting task. Georgetown is a proud program that is used to winning and expects to compete for conference championships and NCAA tournament bids.
The search for Ewing’s replacement will begin immediately, and the new head coach will have the challenge of returning Georgetown to the upper echelon of college basketball.
