Caring for a Loved One with Dementia: Emma Heming Willis’s Plea for Understanding
Model and CocoBaba founder Emma Heming Willis recently shared an emotional video on Instagram in response to husband Bruce Willis being photographed during a rare outing with friends. The action hero’s wife, who has been working with a dementia specialist following his recent diagnosis of frontotemporal dementia (FTD), sought out advice on how to keep him safe while out in public.
“To other caregivers or dementia care specialist navigating this world … Any tips or advice on how to get your loved ones out in the world safely? Please share below,” Emma wrote in her post.
In the video, Emma discussed the challenges of taking care of a loved one with dementia, specifically referencing her husband being filmed or distracted while out in public.
“It’s clear that there’s still a lot of education that needs to be put forth,” she said. “So this one is going out to the photographers and the video people that are trying to get those exclusives of my husband out and about: Just keep your space. I know this is your job, but maybe just keep your space. For the video people, please don’t be yelling at my husband asking him how he’s doing or whatever — the woohoo-ing and the yippee ki yays … just don’t do it. OK? Give him his space. Allow for our family or whoever’s with him that day to be able to get him from point A to point B safely.”
Emma’s plea for understanding and respect is a reminder of the unique challenges that families face when caring for a loved one with dementia. While it can be difficult to navigate the world with a loved one who has dementia, there are certain steps that caregivers can take to ensure the safety of the person with dementia.
First and foremost, it’s important to be aware of the potential risks that come with venturing out into public. Caregivers should always keep an eye on their loved one and be sure to avoid situations that could be potentially dangerous. It might also be helpful to carry a card or other information that explains the person’s condition and how to best care for them in the event of an emergency.
In addition, it’s important to be aware of the signs of distress or confusion that a person with dementia may exhibit. These can include disorientation, agitation, and confusion. If a person with dementia seems overwhelmed or agitated, it’s best to remove them from the situation and provide a safe and comfortable environment for them to relax.
Finally, it’s essential to create an environment where the person with dementia can feel safe and secure. This might involve setting up a routine and familiar environment, providing reminders of past events, and keeping familiar objects nearby.
Caring for a loved one with dementia can be an emotional and exhausting task. Emma Heming Willis’s plea for understanding is a powerful reminder of the need for care, compassion, and respect for those living with dementia and their caregivers.
