The death of an off-duty police officer at the hands of a drunken driver in Texas is a tragic reminder of the dangers of driving while intoxicated. In November 2021, Dylan Molina careened his Jeep into an intersection in Lake Worth, Texas, and struck the car of Euless Police Detective Alex Cervantes, killing him and injuring his wife and two boys.
Video obtained by Fox 4 Dallas shows the aftermath of the crash, including Molina’s attempt to flee the scene. A good Samaritan physically restrained Molina, shouting profanities and telling him that he had “killed somebody.”
In January, Molina pleaded guilty to intoxication manslaughter and was sentenced to 15 years in prison.
The tragedy has sparked further investigation into the bar where Molina was drinking before the crash. Local bartender Cala Richardson was arrested and is facing a misdemeanor charge of allegedly overserving alcohol to Molina. According to reports, Richardson served Molina eight double vodka Red Bull cocktails and 16 single shots in a three-hour period.
The incident has prompted local police chiefs to speak out against the rising levels of violence in the area. “There’s a lack of value for life and no fear of consequences,” one local police chief said.
The case is a reminder of the serious consequences of driving while intoxicated, and the need for stricter regulations regarding alcohol consumption. It is also a stark reminder of the need to be aware of our surroundings and to be mindful of the potential dangers of driving while under the influence.
