The 2017-18 NBA season was a special one for JaVale McGee. After helping the Warriors win their second consecutive championship, he had to decide whether to return to Golden State or accept bigger offers from other teams. In the end, McGee decided to re-sign with the Warriors and it proved to be a great decision.
McGee spoke with former teammate Draymond Green on The Draymond Green Show and explained why he chose to stay with the Warriors. He credited the team’s organization for treating its players with the utmost respect, something he hadn’t experienced with other teams.
The Warriors show their appreciation for players and their families by taking them out to dinners on the road. This is something that McGee hadn’t seen before, and he was impressed by it. He was also impressed by the brotherhood and energy that the Warriors have as a team.
McGee was also grateful to Warriors owners Joe Lacob and Peter Guber for their generosity. He was able to order whatever he wanted and not worry about the bill. This was another factor in why he chose to re-sign with the Warriors for another season.
It paid off for McGee in the end, as he was a key contributor to the Warriors’ championship run, starting the final three games of the series and averaging 8.0 points per contest in the four-game sweep.
Now in his 15th NBA season with the Dallas Mavericks, McGee still hopes to play into his 20th. As a three-time champion, he will always be remembered as a key member of the Warriors’ back-to-back championship teams. And he can always look back and be proud of the decision he made to return to Golden State.
