Kevin Costner is a Hollywood legend and now he’s adding a Golden Globe to his impressive list of awards. On Monday, the 68-year-old actor unboxed his award for Best Actor in a TV Drama for his role as John Dutton III in the hit show Yellowstone. The actor had missed the award ceremony due to the California floods, but finally held his award in a social media video.
The actor opened up about the night of the award ceremony, when he and his wife, Christine, could not make it to the event due to the floods. Costner said his wife had made the night special by buying 30 balloons to watch the ceremony in their den.
“Chris and I we weren’t able to make it to the Golden Globes because of the flooding…and we felt so horrible about that,” Costner said as he began to open the giant brown box. “There was just nothing we could do. We watched the time like sand in a bottle go out as our chances dimmed of getting there.”
Costner opened the case and held the shiny statuette, saying, “I guess there’s no music, but wow. There it is.” He thanked everyone who supported him and said it felt good to have the award.
The award means a lot to Costner as it is his third Golden Globe win. He won previously for Best Actor — Miniseries or Television Film for Hatfields & McCoys in 2013 and Best Director for Dances With Wolves in 1991.
However, the actor is currently in a tense contract negotiation with Paramount Network, who airs Yellowstone. Costner wants to reduce his shooting days to 50, but the network said no, leading to an impasse. Despite that, a Paramount Network spokesperson told Deadline that while there is “no news to report,” Costner “is a big part of Yellowstone and we hope that’s the case for a long time to come.”
Fans of the show have taken to social media to express their hope that Costner will stay with the show. Instagram user @sarahjane82_ wrote, “Congratulations! Now, we need more John Dutton please?”. Another with the handle @4micky put, “Well deserved congratulations. But please don’t leave Yellowstone.”
It remains to be seen whether Costner will stay with the show, but for now he’s enjoying the moment of holding his award. He said, “When you first come to Hollywood, you just wanted to get your first job. You’ve seen these things. You even wonder if you’re ever gonna get in a room like that. It feels really good to have this.”
