Derek Carr has officially hit the open market, leaving behind a nine-year stint with the Oakland and Las Vegas Raiders. Now the free-agent quarterback is looking for his next opportunity and there are a few teams that may make sense for him in the 2023 season.
The Saints are in need of a long-term starter to replace the retired Drew Brees and Jameis Winston has yet to show he can fill this role. Carr could be the answer for New Orleans in 2023 and he could have a solid weapons core with Alvin Kamara, Michael Thomas and Chris Olave. The downside is the Saints don’t have a first-round pick, so a trade would likely have to be made if they wanted to bring him in.
The Steelers are also in need of a new franchise quarterback since Ben Roethlisberger retired. Pittsburg does have a first-round pick at No. 17 overall, and Carr could benefit from the weapons of Najee Harris, George Pickens, Diontae Johnson and Pat Freiermuth.
The Commanders have been dealing with a quarterback carousel since the departure of Carson Wentz and Taylor Heinicke, and perhaps Carr could help push the margins in their favor in 2023.
Finally, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are searching for a new quarterback after Tom Brady departed this offseason. The Bucs have a mid-to-late first-round pick at No. 19 and the skill players of Mike Evans, Chris Godwin, Russell Gage and Leonard Fournette could help Carr find success in Tampa Bay.
At the end of the day, it will come down to what’s best for Derek Carr and his career. All four of these teams have the potential to be a great fit for the veteran quarterback and it will be interesting to see where he ends up in 2023.
