Lucy Liu is a perfect example of what it looks like to be a trailblazer in Hollywood. After encountering some bad behavior from Bill Murray on the set of the 2000 movie Charlie’s Angels, Lucy Liu has become an outspoken advocate for accountability in the entertainment industry.
In July 2021, Liu confirmed that Murray had used “inexcusable and unacceptable language” to berate her in front of the entire cast and crew. Since then, other Murray co-stars, such as Geena Davis, Richard Dreyfus, and Seth Green, have all shared similar stories of bad behavior.
Liu doesn’t take joy in hearing about the experiences of her fellow co-stars. “I felt sad that it happened to other people,” she told People. “It doesn’t make me feel validated to hear other people having bad experiences.”
But Liu says that it’s a good thing that these stories are being shared. “I don’t think it’s a great feeling to have to live with that and to feel that you’re punishing yourself for something that you had no control over,” she said. “I feel very grateful that people are able to speak their minds and release that because I don’t think it’s a positive energy to hold within yourself. It’s valuable to be able to connect to other people and feel like you’re not the only one.”
Liu is a vocal advocate for accountability and respect in the entertainment industry. She has taken a stand and is setting a powerful example for others by speaking out about her experiences and calling for change.
In 2019, Dreyfuss revealed that Murray had been an “Irish drunken bully” on the set of What About Bob? In 2022, Davis wrote in her book that Murray had behaved inappropriately on the set of Quick Change. Green also shared that, when he was 9, Murray had picked him up by his ankles and dangled him over a trash can.
More recently, Murray’s upcoming film Being Mortal was shut down in April 2022 after an unnamed woman working on the film complained that he had acted inappropriately towards her.
Lucy Liu’s experience with Bill Murray has served as motivation for her to be an advocate and role model for accountability and respect in the industry. She is using her voice to stand up against unacceptable behavior, and her example is inspiring other actors to do the same.
