Paxton Lynch’s long road to find a home in pro football continues, as he was benched in the middle of his XFL debut with the Orlando Guardians.
It was a disappointing turn of events for Lynch, who was hoping to revive his career in the XFL after being drafted in the first round by the Denver Broncos in 2016. The Cowboys had their eye on Lynch during the draft that year, but the Broncos beat them to the punch.
He had a promising start to the game, throwing a touchdown pass to former NFL receiver Cody Latimer on the opening drive. But the Guardians fell behind 21-6 in the third quarter and Lynch was benched in favor of Quentin Dormady.
Lynch’s 21st pass of the day was his last one: an interception. Dormady also threw two picks and the Guardians ended up losing 33-12 to the Houston Roughnecks.
It remains to be seen whether Lynch will get another chance to show what he can do in the XFL. Despite the setbacks, he has kept at it and is still looking for the right opportunity to prove himself. He has had stints with the Broncos, Steelers, Saskatchewan Roughriders (CFL), and Michigan Panthers (USFL).
At the end of the day, Lynch’s perseverance and determination is admirable, even if the results have not been all that he has hoped for. He will continue to battle, and hopefully he will get another chance to succeed in the XFL.
