The theft of catalytic converters is an increasingly dangerous problem that has been on the rise since 2018 due to an expanding black market and high prices of precious metals it contains. The parts help cars reduce the amount of toxic and polluting gases emitted from each vehicle’s engine, and are a highly sought-after item that is being stolen from unsuspecting drivers or from car dealerships. As the thefts increase, so does the risk of people being killed in the process.
The number of catalytic converter thefts has increased over 1,200 percent between 2018 and 2022, according to the National Insurance Crime Bureau. With the price of rhodium – a metal found in the parts – reaching up to eight times the price of gold, it’s no wonder people are scouring for it. Replacing the part can cost drivers up to $3,000, and preventative measures such as Cat Shields – a mechanism that blocks access to the converter – can cost between $200 and $500.
Unfortunately, people are being killed while attempting to steal the parts. In recent months, several people have been run over or crushed to death while attempting to steal the parts, according to local reports across the country. In February of 2023, a woman in Palmdale, California was asleep in her Ford Excursion when a man went underneath her car and began attempting to saw off her converter. When she awoke to the noise, she started her car and reversed from the parking spot, not knowing someone was beneath her, killing the man.
To combat the thefts, states have been introducing new laws to stem the uptick. In California, for example, there is a law that requires purchasers to register extra layers of documentation such as the VIN number of the converter’s original car, as well as information about the car’s make, year, and model.
Catalytic converter thefts are a serious problem that is costing people their lives. As the thefts continue to increase, it is important to be vigilant and take preventative measures to protect your car and yourself.
