Jeff Overton is one of many former PGA Tour winners vying for four spots in the 2020 Honda Classic final. The qualifiers will be held at the Tesoro Club in Port St. Lucie, Florida on Monday.
Overton, a Palm Beach resident, is one of 12 former PGA Tour winners in the field including Wood Austin, Scott Brown, Jonas Blixt, Daniel Chopra, Matt Every, Tommy Gainey, Robert Garrigus, Richard Johnson of Jupiter, Sung Kang, William McGirt, Ted Potter Jr. and Bo Van Pelt.
Also in the field are Tequesta’s Steve Marino, who has earned more than $10 million on the PGA Tour; Erik Compton, the Miami native who has had a pair of heart transplants; Nicholas and Curtis Thompson, the older brothers of Lexi; and former University of Texas star Cole Hammer.
Local pros include Kris Blanks, Jay Card, Albin Choi, James Driscoll, David Pastore and Drew McClain of Jupiter; Seminole Head PGA Professional Matt Cahill; Tim Cantwell, Christopher Finke, David Sanders, Kristoffer Ventura and Christobal Del Solar of Palm Beach Gardens; Ryan Davis of West Palm Beach; Ryan Gerard of Stuart; David Hearn of Delray Beach; and Joaquin Lolas of Tequesta.
The qualifier is run by the South Florida PGA and will feature 139 players. Since there are only four spots available, the event can last until Tuesday morning if there are playoffs for the final spots.
American Honda has announced it will end its sponsorship of the Honda Classic after next week, but tournament officials are confident another sponsor will be found before next year.
This year’s Honda Classic is situated between four designated events on the PGA Tour’s new schedule, and while none of the top 18 players in the world rankings and eight of the top 50 have committed to the event, interest remains high among golfers hoping to get into the tournament.
For those who don’t make it through the qualifier, there is still hope, as the tournament is offering four sponsor exemptions and two spots in the Monday qualifier for the next four PGA Tour events.
