Rihanna is a global music icon and her fans have been eagerly awaiting her return to the spotlight. Now, the singer is making waves with a special announcement: She has been nominated for an Oscar for her song “Lift Me Up” from the movie Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. But even more special than the honor of being nominated is the sweet moment Rihanna shared with her son when she found out about the news.
In an Instagram post, Rihanna shared a photo of her son’s tearful expression when he found out that his sibling was going to the Oscars and not him. It was a moment of bittersweet news, as Rihanna and partner A$AP Rocky welcomed their first son last May and are expecting a second baby soon.
Rihanna will be performing her nominated song, “Lift Me Up” at the March 12 ceremony, but unfortunately her son won’t be joining her there. But they recently made their British Vogue debut, with Rihanna opening up about motherhood.
“Oh, my God, it’s legendary,” she said. “It’s everything. You really don’t remember life before, that’s the craziest thing ever.”
Rihanna also shared how she preemptively posted photos of her son’s face for the first time on TikTok after photographers captured her beach photo shoot with her baby.
“I just went straight into protective mode,” she said. “Like there wasn’t even time for rage. [Rocky and I] drove up to the trailer area and we sat in the car chatting and working out how we move forward. As parents it just feels so icky, like a violation. … As we were speaking, we knew they were making calls and deals.”
Posting her baby on TikTok gave Rihanna a sense of control over the situation, and she made it clear that her son doesn’t have a say in any of this. She is a wonderfully devoted mother, and her fans can look forward to seeing her perform at the Oscars and honoring her incredible achievement.
