The Tennessee Titans are reportedly looking to move on from their star running back, Derrick Henry. According to Michael Silver of the NFL Network, the Titans have been shopping Henry, who is due a base salary of $10.5 million this season, none of which is guaranteed.
If the Titans were to trade Henry, they’d save $6.3 million on their salary cap in 2023. This is just the latest move in a series of changes the Titans have made in an attempt to rebuild.
Henry, 29, was named the NFL’s Offensive Player of the Year in 2020. He has led the NFL in rushing yards twice and in carries three times, including last season. However, his yards per carry average dropped from 5.4 in 2020 to 4.4 in 2021.
The Titans earned the AFC No. 1 seed in 2021, but last year they acted more like a rebuilding team by trading wide receiver A.J. Brown, and this year they’re continuing to shed expensive players. With the salary cap issues they currently face, it doesn’t appear that the Titans will be able to keep Henry around much longer.
Henry has been one of the most productive running backs in the NFL over the past few seasons and has been an integral part of the Titans’ success. But with the salary cap issues they are facing, it appears that his days in Tennessee may be numbered. It will be interesting to see what the Titans can get in return for Henry, and if they can use that to build a team that can repeat their success from 2021.
